Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.
Zig Ziglar.
With the increased frustration of trying to put together this case report, I decided to get my quote from a familiar source to provide me some comfort. There is no one more familiar then good old Zig Ziglar. Reminding us that success isn't about what you were born with but rather the amount of work you put into endeavors.
I'm sure we altered the course schedule at the beginning of the semester but without any reminders of such, I was under the impression that we were meeting today to go over how we're going to put together our case report. Due to the fact that I really wasn't able to do a quality assessment (in my opinion), i'm having a hard time doing the report. every assessment given showed the student at the frustration level. the fact that i was unable to find a level he could read hindered the assessment process (in my opinion) because i wasn't able to assess comprehension.
Alan,
ReplyDeleteBecause of today's class request, as relayed by Yolie, and mentioned in my previous e-mail, I granted the time for all of you to work at home. I was en route to UOG at the time I received the calls, but made the consideration if Yolie was able to contact everyone and get the consensus to work at home because of productivity's sake.
In our previous sessions I had given you the case report template required for the diagnostic case report. Details were shown in the sample reports, which I shared in relation to the template that I mentioned earlier. I further explained that there is no set length for the case reports, since every child has different circumstances, a unique background, etc. This was also reviewed in the Lipson and Wixson text.
Since you are struggling with the case report, I will grant you additional time to complete it by this week. I understand that you and your classmates have shared some challenges during your assessments, and I advised that you must exhaust the primer and pre-primer assessments to show evidence of your assessment indicating the reading struggles your student is experiencing, despite the fact that he is in the fourth grade.
We also reviewed the Lipson and Wixson text and Literacy Assessment, A Handbook of Instruments. Because you and your classmates were required to conduct PowerPoint presentations for the text, you were further introduced to the emergent reading assessments. Not to mention, I also allowed you to borrow the pre-literacy Reading Success Network for additional pre-literacy assessments.
As you prepare your case report, follow the case report template, as I mentioned earlier. Report your findings based on your assessments. Since your child's level appears to be at the emergent stage, you would have to report such findings based on your QRI-IV assessment, pre-literacy RSN assessment, etc. As you may recall, I also asked for all of you to employ the strategies you learned in ED645. Report the information on the use of these strategies, if carried out. As an educator, you are also familiar with the reading skills/standards expected of respective grade levels. Based upon this schema, you would further report this in relation to your emergent reading findings.
If you need to meet with me to discuss further details, please let me know as soon as possible. Good luck, and keep me posted.
Best regards,
Dr. Rivera
Hey, Alan,
ReplyDeleteI can understand your frustration but take a piece of advise from good old Zig -it's the attitude and not the aptitude that counts. So make lemonade out of the lemons. Call me so that I can help you with your report. Hang in there, don't give up.
